HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING, by Shepherd Mead
A word from business humorist and novelist Stanley Bing:
HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING by Shepherd Mead has spawned an enduring industry. Innumerable productions of the long-running, award-winning Broadway play that grew from this book have been enjoyed by generations. An excellent movie, too, tilled the ground initially turned over by the sage, one that defined the reality of corporate life better than any other such effort, at least until Don Draper showed up with his fedora and vat of Canadian Club. All these offshoots, as well as the original, are built around a core premise still not recognized by all the squeaky, upbeat Dale Carnegie knockoffs or tedious Business School scholars. And that phrase is this: Business is ridiculous.
People in business are, too. Only those who embrace the essential fatuity and irrationality of organizational life will survive and prosper. This was the first book that truly made these facts clear, following the upward arc of its hapless but ambitious hero, J. Pierrepont Finch.
"If you have education, intelligence, and ability, so much the better," Mead advises young Finch, then adds helpfully, "But remember that thousands have reached the top without them. You, too, can be among the lucky few." Thus he offers both an accurate assessment of the situation and an encouragement to the insecure among us. This is the way executives are, he tells us. They’re a lot like you. Only richer, crazier and lazier. But have hope. There is a way. And here it is.
HOW TO SUCCEED IN BUSINESS WITHOUT REALLY TRYING by Shepherd Mead is on sale now, with a new introduction by me, Stanley Bing, who humbly treads in the footsteps of the master. First published in 1952, the book that inspired and tickled several generations now returns to shelves just in time for the new 50th anniversary production of the play. This new Broadway production promises to possess in every way the same wit, insight and sharp elbows as its predecessors. Welcome back, Pierrepont!

Chock full o’ Nuts
With an entrepreneur spirit, William Black opened his first Chock full o’Nuts retail nut shop in 1926 in New York’s theatre district at Broadway and 43rd Street. In the next three years, his successful nut business grew quickly into a chain of 18 shops throughout the city. The Great Depression hit in ‘29 and caused a severe drop in nut sales pushing Black to the brink of bankruptcy. In an attempt to save his business, Mr. Black began selling high quality, fresh brewed coffee in his nut shops. New Yorkers loved his “Chock full o’Nuts” coffee and date-nut sandwich for only a nickel.
In 1953, Black began selling his own brand of coffee – named after his small coffee shops -- in local supermarkets; and his “Chock full o’Nuts” brand coffee has been a New York favorite ever since. The company’s radio and TV jingle, “Chock full o’Nuts is that heavenly coffee, better coffee a millionaire’s money can’t buy” are known, loved and hummed by generations of New Yorkers.
